Jefferson County sits near the center of Colorado, and it includes the Denver-Boulder Combined Statistical Area, the state’s largest metro area. It sprawls over 12 different counties, but Jefferson County is right in the middle, making the use of public transportation appealing. The county includes a number of cities. Arvada, Applewood, Golden, Lakewood, and Wheatridge are just a few places you can look to find great homes for sale in Colorado. Many of these urban locations offer areas with high walkability scores.
But why Jefferson County? Well, one reason is best summed up in the county slogan: “Gateway to the Rocky Mountains.” If you love the beautiful Rockies, this is the place to live. Jefferson sits on the Front Range of the Rockies, the Southern portion of the range that includes Pikes Peak, Longs Peak, and Mount Evans. If you love the outdoors, you’ll have the chance to visit the mountains regularly. Jefferson County is also home to dozens of recreational areas and several state parks. The Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge and the Two Ponds National Wildlife Refuge are great places to spend the day, or you could go hiking along the South Platte historical trail or one of the other recreational trails that wind their way through parts of the area.
As far as the job market goes, Jefferson County has a number of great places to work. One of the largest employers in the area is the Coors Brewing Company located in Golden, CO. The Colorado School of Mines is another major employer. Lockheed Martin Space Systems, NREL, the Denver Federal Center, and the Exempla Lutheran Medical Center also employ many residents. For commuters, there are also many opportunities in the Jefferson County area.
Families with school-age children will want to learn about the Jefferson County School District R-1, which is the largest school district in the state. There are 148 schools in the district that serve over 84,000 students. As of 2014, this includes eight option schools and eleven charter schools. For higher education, the Colorado School of Mines offers degrees in areas such as engineering and applied sciences. About a third of all families in the area have children under the age of 18.
For active seniors and baby boomers there are numerous opportunities for ranch style, patio home, and golf course community living throughout Jefferson County. Many boomers are opting to live in places with a high walk score to be close to services and shopping.
